Living next to a airport that is puddle hoppers to 12 passage private corporate jets I can say one thing for sure. When the wind is blowing over my place the kerosene smell can be overwhelming, sometimes you can almost feel it it's so thick. I would be interested in being considered for one of the monitors discussed in this interview if my place would qualify. I never thought about the heavy metals contained in fuel. I thought your interview was excellent. The one thing I have really noticed in recent years is the whitening of the sky along the horizon. I am in the habit of being outside around sunrise most days and I've noticed the first sunlight is always hazy even on clear days now. I had thought it might be local air pollution as I live in a large conurbation with lots of traffic, but have noticed it is the same in other places too and on windy days. So what you mentioned makes sense - that it is pollution much higher up in the atmosphere and so more visible at the horizons - similar idea of the atmosphere blocking UV light in the morning and late afternoon compared to when coming from directly overhead around noon.
So two days ago we had so many trails from planes criss-crossing the skies producing clouds that blocked out some of the sunlight, but today it was completely clear all day with no trails at all. I wonder if they use the AI tool you mentioned to create clearer days sometimes or whether it is just that the airmass is not conducive to cloud formation today. I always wonder about how it can be so different on two different days in the same location and with the same flight schedule as there are 4 major airports and an air force base within 60 miles of me so we have a lot of air traffic everyday.
By the way, I like the idea of citizen-led monitoring and would be happy to do so.
